SML at the Lifeguard POD – Episode 31

Jesus is not your typical King. This week the kids talk about Palm Sunday and learn how Jesus acted as King.

Daily Prayer

Dear God, we celebrate today just as those people celebrated in Jerusalem two thousand years ago. This is the day that You have made; we will rejoice and be glad in it! In Jesus’ name, amen.

Sing A Song.

.

Think About It

Read the story of Palm Sunday in Luke 19:28 – 40. Then answer the following questions.
    1. What are some of the reasons we want to praise Jesus?
    2. What are some ways we can praise Jesus?
    3. What is your favorite way to praise Jesus?

Build a Donkey

Just like the donkey that carried Jesus into Jerusalem.  With a few simple materials you can create a donkey to help celebrate Palm Sunday.

paper bag donkey

This is a fun and easy cut and paste paper craft that uses a paper bag as a base to make a donkey puppet.

You can either make a grey donkey or a brown donkey.

Materials:

  • a paper lunch bag
  • for Grey Donkey:  grey construction paper or grey poster paint
  • a printer,
  • some crayons,
  • scissors,
  • glue,
  • paper for the printer

Optional:

  • big wiggly eyes

Create:

  • Grey Donkey:  Cover the paper bag with grey construction paper (just glue it on and trim) or paint the paper bag grey and let dry.
  • Brown Donkey:  just use the brown paper bag.
  • Cut out a small circle from paper, color and glue underneath the flippy tab so you can see part of the circle sticking out from under the nose.
  • Cut out a bigger oval for the nose, color and glue onto the HEAD.  It should overlap the body a bit.
  • Glue the eyes onto the HEAD above the nose.  If you like, you can use wiggly eyes instead of paper cut outs (or you can just color in the eyes
  • Cut out ears and glue them onto the HEAD.
  • Cut out and glue a hair tuft onto the HEAD.
  • Cut out, color and glue the arms into the FLAP.
  • Cut out, color and glue the tail onto the BACK

Stick your hand inside and you have a donkey puppet!

HOW TO MAKE A PALM CROSS FOR PALM SUNDAY

I love the ease of this craft as you really don’t need anything but green construction paper, a pair of scissors and a ruler if you don’t trust your skills in cutting considerably even strips!

Feel free to use other colors too!

Instructions:

  1.  Cut a long strip of cardstock/craft paper, approximately 0.5-1″ in width and close to 12″ or more in length.
  2. Take the strip and fold it in the middle to form an inverted right angle/ an upside down L.
  3. Now take the vertical strip and fold that up.
  4. Turn that reverse L over to form a 7 and then fold the vertical end over again.
  5. Then take the horizontal end and fold it over.
  6. Now when you look in the back you will notice you have made a small square pocket of sorts.
  7. Take the horizontal arm and slide it through the pocket from the back, all the way to the end and gently tug at it to ensure it’s firm.
  8. Now slide half the horizontal end to form one arm of the cross.
  9. Take the other end and fold it in to form the second arm of the cross. (Make sure both arms are of equal length)
  10. Now turn the cross over and take the vertical end of the cross and gently slip it through the pocket slit from the back. Leave as much of it on top as you would like and adjust the remaining through the slit to form the foot of the cross.
  11. And there you have it, your paper Palm Cross is ready!
